Drivers warned of growing ‘crash for cash’ scam putting motorists and their data at risk

Police have warned drivers of a new scam that could endanger both themselves and their identity data.

As part of the “Crash for Cash” con, drivers will deliberately collide with other vehicles in an attempt to file a fraudulent claim to gain financial compensation.

Dashcam footage released by City of London Police shows a string of incidents, which include drivers purposely slowing down and pulling into the wrong lane to instigate a collision.

The force explained that scammers are also regularly demanding to take pictures of driving licences at the roadside, using the personal data to commit further crimes.

The Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) and dashcam manufacturer Nextbase said that the scams are a “growing problem and criminals are becoming more aggressive in how they carry out these schemes”, and urged drivers to remain vigilant.
