SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Yonhap) -- The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment said Friday they have signed an agreement to cooperate in promoting the battery recycling industry.

Under the agreement, the two ministries will work together to establish a platform for managing battery trade and history, link certification systems for recycled materials, improve related regulations and conduct joint research and development projects, according to the ministries.

To implement the policies swiftly and effectively, the ministries will form a working-level consultative body.

Lithium-ion batteries, which are used in smartphones, electric vehicles and energy storage systems, contain critical minerals, including lithium, cobalt and nickel.

The government said establishing a sustainable battery life cycle is crucial to fostering the battery industry as a key future growth sector.
