Major spoilers ahead for Lucky episode 3

“Read the Room,” Lucky’s third episode, brings Cary (Drew Starkey) face-to-face with his wife, but it’s not because he was kidnapped. Lucky (Anya Taylor-Joy) tracks him down after a bout of shaken confidence is shrugged off and she uses Dutch’s (Clifton Collins Jr.) latest kill to put her on her husband’s trail.

But she’s not the only one who wants answers from Cary. The FBI are working an angle that puts them a step closer to finding him just as Whittaker (William Fichtner) gives Priscilla (Annette Bening) the information she needs to locate her son. With the feds ready to haul Cary in and a mob boss a move away from killing him, Cary has a lot riding on Lucky being the one who found him.

However, she’s supposed to be there for the money, not a reckoning. Cary’s betrayal not only put her life in danger, but what he’s done with the money may have also made him her new target.

Lucky Witnesses Noah’s Murder

When Lucky climbed in the back of Dutch’s pick-up truck at the end of “Make ‘Em Dance,” she had no idea where he was going. At the start of “Read the Room,” she finds herself on Priscilla’s property. Specifically, near the stables where Dutch and his goons have been keeping Noah (Matthew Rauch), an unsuspecting man Priscilla plucked from his home because she thought he had information on Cary’s whereabouts.

Priscilla had tracked her son’s rental car to Long Beach. She found a crumpled napkin with Noah’s Echo Park address on it and expected that with a bit of violence-laced coercion, Noah would start talking. Priscilla shot him in the foot before having him taken to her home, and then he was held in her stables and worked over. But he still had nothing to share with Dutch.

Lucky bares witness to Noah’s torture when she climbs out of Dutch’s truck and sneaks into the stables. She hides in a stall as she watches Dutch break Noah’s nose and then one of his fingers. Dutch tells him that he knows Noah makes fake IDs, but the bloodied man doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

He tries to tell Priscilla the same when she comes in with her horse. She hears him. The problem is that means Noah is of no use to her, so she tells Dutch to get rid of him. As soon as she’s gone, Dutch carries out his order and shoots Noah in the head.

The murder shakes Lucky up so much that she risks taking John’s (Timothy Olyphant) call despite Dutch having left the stables only moments prior. Lucky tells her father that she doesn’t think she’s going to make it, people are dying.

He reminds her that she can’t say things like that on the phone. John also takes a tough approach with her. He tells Lucky that she’s going to figure out next steps and by the time he calls again, she’s going to be in a better place.

John gets her to repeat it and then she gets off the phone, leaving him to worry since he can’t help his daughter beyond giving pep talks.

Once she’s got her head back on straight, Lucky creeps out of the stall and walks over to Noah’s body. She grabs his ID, which Dutch had thrown at his feet, because she knows it’s a clue to finding Cary. His address was a stop along the way to wherever her husband ran off, she just has to get there and scope it out.

John’s Lessons Give Lucky A Leg Up On Everyone Else

Stuck on foot, Lucky hits a break when she’s wandering an affluent neighborhood. She makes her way into a child’s birthday party by pretending to be an employee of Naomi, the woman of the house.

Her mark is a guest who was struggling to remove a stroller from her trunk and keep up with her older child. She assists the woman, making small talk with her son to avoid being caught out about not actually knowing Naomi. Then she makes her way into the house from the backyard.

Lucky changes into Naomi’s clothes to give the appearance that she’s a party attendee but then has to make up a quick story when she stumbles upon a guest in the bathroom.

The guest’s name is Sharon (Annie Tedesco), and she’s a bit loose at the mouth because she’s been drinking. She takes Lucky at her word that she was invited to change into one of Naomi’s outfits because she’d spilled wine on her own clothes.

Adopting a conspiratorial tone, Lucky convinces Sharon that she knows Naomi, too, by leaning into a gossipy conversation about Naomi’s impending divorce from her husband. The two women chat like they’re girlfriends and by the time they make it downstairs, Sharon thinks she’s made a friend to talk to at the party. They get drinks at the open bar.

However, Lucky has been scoping the place. As the guests begin singing “Happy Birthday” and making their way to the backyard, Lucky uses their distraction to her advantage.

In her youth, John had taught her that children’s birthday parties were ripe for the picking. Women leave their purses unguarded and the envelopes not attached to presents on the gift table typically have cash in them. He’d watched as she fleeced the unaware birthday attendees at a party they weren’t invited to.

Lucky does the same in the present day, but her score is much more substantial. She also grabs an expensive coat and bag as she heads out the door. The woman she stole from kept her valet number and tip in her purse, so she has a car now, too.

Lucky Finds Cary

When Lucky gets to Noah’s house, she finds the door still open and his video game paused. She checks his phone, but the only thing on it is a picture of him with a woman. They look happy. Someone will grieve him when they learn of his death. Seeing that there’s nothing she can use to find Cary, Lucky steps back outside and takes in her surroundings.

There’s a mailbox half-covered by foliage. It’s in this moment that the pieces start to come together. Priscilla and Dutch were at the wrong house. The maker of fake IDs that Cary came to see is Noah’s neighbor.

She (Nicole Chanel Williams) withholds her name but decides to make Lucky a fake when Lucky convincingly stumbles her way through asking in a roundabout manner like the rich woman without a clue that she’s pretending to be.

Lucky tells her that a man on Reddit suggested her and spins yet another tale about a marriage gone wrong. She doesn’t just want to leave her husband, she wants to disappear entirely into a new identity.

The woman takes a few pictures and then hands Lucky a bin of misprints so she can see her work. As she’s looking, Lucky comes across a misprint of Cary’s fake. It puts his new address in La Jolla at a property he’s leased in the seaside town.

When John checks in again, this time on a burner phone so they can talk freely, Lucky is sitting outside of Cary’s house. She tells him that she’s going to get their money back. John warns that she needs to get in and out like Zorro, leave her little ‘Z’ and be on her way.

Lucky doesn’t want to hear it because she believes she has the situation handled, but John is concerned she’s too emotional. That she’ll try to seek answers from Cary for what he did when nothing he tells her will ever be enough.

The man she loves betrayed her, it’s as simple and complicated as that. Getting to Cary, however, takes another con since he has a well fortified home. Lucky finds the real estate agent who leased it to him, lets him think that he’s taking a drunk and broken-hearted woman to his office to coerce into sex, and then blackmails him by threatening to tell his wife.

He gives her the access codes and key to the place, and Lucky sneaks in the next morning while Cary is down at the beach. She takes a knife to his couch, throw pillows, and mattress in search of what’s left of the $10 million, but he hasn’t put it in a physical hiding spot.

Lucky finds his go bag in the hamper. It’s got a gun and a laptop. She discovers that Cary tied the money up in cryptocurrency and she’ll need a 12 word seed phrase to access his account. Cary finds her waiting for him at the table. He’s been caught.

The FBI And Priscilla Are Hot On Cary’s Trail

Earlier in the episode, Billie (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) wanted to keep tracking Lucky. It’s Gates (Mo Mcrae) who tries to get her to pivot to finding Cary. She doesn’t, but she lets him track his lead on Cary’s rental car while she looks at surveillance tape of Lucky at the gas station.

She spots her climbing into Dutch’s truck bed. The same truck that Dutch drove to Priscilla’s property. When Billie gets there, the stables have been washed down and bleached to be rid of Noah’s blood. She comes face-to-face with Priscilla and the two have a tense conversation. They goad one another about their circumstances.

Billie fills Priscilla in on Lucky being right under her nose without her being the slightest bit aware. She also gets much needed information from the mob leader. Cary’s rental car is a dead end. Back in her car, Billie tells Gates what she knows without giving away how she knows it.

She tells him to look into every car dealership in Southern California where a car was purchased with cash in the last two days. Cary’s a 29 year old man with $10 million dollars burning a hole in his pocket, she knows he bought a new car.

Billie’s right. Gates calls her back that night to share Cary bought a blue Bronco Heritage with a new ID. They know exactly where he is, but they’re not alone.

That same night, Priscilla receives a call from Whittaker. Once again he’s threatening her and makes it clear it’s not just about the money. It’s about a zero tolerance policy for stealing from him.

He needs her to recognize that she needs to be worried about him, not her son because that’s the only way she’s going to make it out of this situation alive. Whittaker tells Priscilla that he found Cary and gives her the information she couldn’t get on her own.
