An Irish man has died in an apparent drowning tragedy in Thailand.

Thai media reports say the 28-year-old Irish man was holidaying in the Phuket area when he went swimming in a lagoon on Tuesday night.

He was seen disappearing under the water, sparking a search operation.

That was stood down after a number of hours, but the man's body was found near the water's edge on Thursday morning.

Police were called to the scene along with a forensic team.

The body of the Irish national was then removed for a full post-mortem, and a full investigation into his death is now underway.

According to the Phuket Express, officers are now examining CCTV from the area, interviewing witnesses and gathering other evidence.

Thai authorities say they've been in contact with the Irish Embassy in Bangkok.
