Death comes to Carbon: Woman, 72, killed after parked truck pins her

CEBU CITY, Philippines — A 72-year-old woman died after a parked delivery truck suddenly lurched forward and pinned her along Plaridel Street in the Carbon area of Cebu City on Thursday afternoon, August 6, after a truck helper allegedly brushed against the vehicle’s gear shift.

The 25-year-old truck helper was arrested and is being held by the Cebu City Police Office’s Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) while police prepare a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

However, both parties agreed to settle the matter on Friday, August 7.

Truck moved while parked

According to the TEU investigation, the incident happened around 3:10 p.m. along Plaridel Street in Barangay Ermita.

Police identified the victim as a 72-year-old woman from Canlumampao, Toledo City, Cebu.

The suspect was identified as the truck helper of an Isuzu Forward closed van.

Investigators said the truck was stationary with its engine still running when the incident occurred.

Police said the suspect had boarded the vehicle and was passing through the driver’s side when he allegedly negligently brushed against the gear shift, causing the transmission to engage.

As a result, the truck suddenly moved forward.

Authorities said the victim happened to be in the truck’s path and was struck before becoming pinned against the middle front portion of the vehicle.

She sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center for treatment but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Truck helper arrested

Police said the incident was reported and investigated around 6:30 p.m. on the same day.

Following the investigation, authorities arrested the truck helper for alleged reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

Investigators said the suspect failed to exercise due diligence, causing the vehicle to move forward and fatally strike the pedestrian.

Settlement reached

According to the TEU, the victim’s family and the parties involved agreed to settle the matter on Friday.

Under the agreement, the truck driver agreed to shoulder the victim’s wake and burial expenses.
