Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel made a statement in Gorakhpur on Thursday (August 6, 2026) regarding the deficiencies she observed on the campus. She gave Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University three months to address these issues, which led to an uproar on Friday, with the Opposition alleging that the Gorakhpur model had been exposed.
During her address at the university’s 45th convocation, she pointed out various deficiencies, particularly concerning the hostels.
“The University operates three hostels for girls, with one currently undergoing repairs. Out of the six hostels designated for boys, two are also under repair. While there is a mess facility in the girls’ hostel, the boys’ hostels lack this amenity. Instead, the boys receive their meals through a tiffin service. Do you believe the tiffin service is satisfactory? said the Governor.
“I wish to address these deficiencies. They need to be resolved within a three-month timeframe. This is Gorakhpur, the city of our chief minister. How can such conditions persist here?” she stated. Regarding the standard of food provided to students, Ms. Patel mentioned that she had conducted a personal inspection of the kitchen the previous day.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) president, Akhilesh Yadav, in a cryptic statement, said that the mutual conflict turned the “double engine” into a “trouble engine”.
“While exposing the ‘Gorakhpur Model’, the scandal surrounding the ‘Gujarat Model’ also surfaced as a comparison. The common denominator between the two is the BJP government and the BJP’s rampant corruption. Mutual conflict has turned the ‘double engine’ into a ‘trouble engine’,” wrote Mr. Yadav, along with the video of the Governor’s speech.
