Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday (August 7, 2026) asked officials to take stringent action against those responsible for the hit-and-run in Rajamahendravaram in which two medical students were injured.

The Chief Minister reviewed the condition of the injured students, Priyanka and Umesh, and sought a detailed report.

Officials told him that the students were allegedly struck by a car driven by two people who were reportedly under the influence of alcohol, that the occupants fled, and that the accused had since been arrested.

Mr. Naidu asked the police to ensure a thorough investigation and take all necessary legal measures. He said the government would follow a policy of zero tolerance towards drunk driving and reckless conduct, and that those who endangered the lives of innocent people should face strict punishment.

He also asked health officials to provide the best available medical care to the students and monitor their progress, and to pay close attention to Priyanka’s condition. Mr. Naidu assured the students’ families of the government’s support until their recovery.

How it happened

Priyanka, an MD student, suffered critical head injuries on August 3 when a car allegedly hit her two-wheeler near a multiplex in the city, the police said. She was returning to her hostel with a friend after a film.

Two men, said to be engineering students, allegedly fled after the crash. The police have taken them into custody and registered a case. Priyanka was admitted to a hospital in Rajamahendravaram and later moved to Hyderabad for further treatment.
