US jobs unexpectedly fell last month as employment declined during the summer in local government education and retail, official figures said.

Analysts had predicted an uptick in the number of jobs created in the world's largest economy in July, but the number of roles fell by 23,000 over the month.

However, the Bureau of Statistics said the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%.

The official US statistics body also revised down the number of jobs added in May and June by a large amount, with the number of roles being 103,000 fewer than previously reported across both months.
