Frequent power outages and delays in rectifying electrical faults, particularly at night, have become a major cause of inconvenience for residents in several parts of Tiruchi.
Consumers have expressed concern over prolonged power outages, alleging that frequent faults in distribution lines and transformers often remain unattended for hours, particularly at night, disrupting life and causing hardship.
“When we call the EB office, there is no one to answer the phone. Personnel should be assigned to attend calls and register complaints,” said J. Jesuraj, a resident.
Residents said that when complaints are registered, faults are usually rectified within an hour. However, they alleged that restoration had been taking much longer in recent weeks.
“When we contact the toll-free Minnagam helpline, officials tell us that power supply will be restored within 30 minutes and refuse to take complaints, saying they will register complaints if the supply is not restored within the stipulated time,” he added.
In one such incident, a fault developed in the power supply line feeding an electrical substation at Edamalaipatti Pudur, disrupting electricity supply to the area from 2.50 a.m. on Friday. Repair work began at 6 a.m., and after nearly three hours of restoration work, normal power supply was restored by 9 a.m.
Residents said repeated power outages and delays in fault rectification have become a recurring issue. They urged the authorities to strengthen the maintenance system, improve emergency response, and deploy adequate field staff to ensure quicker restoration of power.
When contacted, a senior official said that the recurring faults were mostly due to the windy weather. “We are attending to the faults as soon as we receive complaints. Staff have been deployed on night shifts to respond to emergency situations promptly,” the official said.
