An additional ₹3.6 crore has been earmarked for concrete road works at the under-construction second terminal of the Ukkadam bus terminus in Coimbatore, taking the project cost beyond the original estimate.

The Coimbatore Corporation had awarded the project for the twin bus terminus at Ukkadam at an estimated cost of ₹21.55 crore. Of this, Terminal-1 was constructed at a cost of about ₹13 crore and opened before the Assembly elections. The remaining ₹8.55 crore was allocated for Terminal-2.

Most of the civil works at Terminal-2, including the construction of shops, toilets, bus bays and passenger amenities, have been completed. Only a few minor works, including a short stretch of the compound wall, remain pending. The upgraded bus terminus will have 58 bus bays across the two terminals and expanded space to accommodate around 80 buses. Facilities include redesigned entry routes for buses, three toilet blocks, two commercial complexes, tensile roofing, seating for 60 passengers and two lactation rooms.

The civic body has floated separate tenders worth about ₹3.6 crore for additional concrete road works. These include ₹1.99 crore for laying a concrete pavement along the bus movement corridor within the terminus and ₹1.66 crore for constructing a concrete road at the bus exit connecting to the Sungam bypass.

The officials said the additional works were necessitated by the increase in construction material costs and site-specific engineering requirements. They explained that the bus terminus is located close to the Ukkadam Big Tank (Periyakulam), where the soil is relatively weak. Since heavy buses will frequently use the entry and exit points, conventional road surfaces are likely to deteriorate quickly. It was therefore decided to provide thicker concrete pavements in these stretches, for which a separate estimate was prepared and tenders invited. The officials said the tender process for the additional road works is under way and the works are expected to be completed within two months.
