The enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which was scheduled to end on Saturday, has been extended till August 17, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Karnataka, announced on Friday. This is the second extension granted for the exercise.

The draft electoral rolls, scheduled to be published on August 17, will now be released on August 24. The period for filing claims and objections will run from August 24 to September 23, while the final electoral rolls will be published on October 27.

The extension comes days after civil society groups urged the Election Commission to extend the exercise following the publication of the Absent, Shifted, Duplicate, Dead and Others (ASDDO) list, arguing that voters needed adequate time to check whether they had been wrongly classified and approach their Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for corrections.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president B.K. Hariprasad had also written to the Karnataka CEO on August 6, seeking a 15-day extension.

With the deadline now extended, voters whose names have been wrongly included in the ASDDO list have time till August 17 to get their details corrected.

As of 4 p.m. on Friday, only 182 enumeration forms were pending digitisation across the State — from Bengaluru South and Belagavi districts.

Meanwhile, the share of voters placed under the ASDDO category has declined from 20.02% on August 5 to 19.81%, indicating that many voters had been wrongly placed under this category.
