A new 5,000-litre capacity bulk milk chilling centre has been established at Kottaikadu in Karambakudi taluk of Pudukkottai district to improve milk collection, chilling, and storage facilities for dairy farmers.
Established at a cost of ₹24 lakh under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), the centre was inaugurated by Minister for Labour Welfare and Skill Development C. Mohamed Farvas.
The centre will procure around 3,000 litres of milk every day, collected during morning and evening sessions from 28 milk cooperative societies in the surrounding areas through two milk collection routes.
The facility aims at improving the quality and shelf life of procured milk and to provide better milk collection and chilling infrastructure for dairy farmers. The establishment of additional milk cooperative societies in the surrounding areas is expected to boost production and farmers’ income.
On the occasion, Mr. Farvas distributed sanction orders for loan assistance with subsidy amounting to ₹24.50 lakh to 11 beneficiaries under the mini dairy farm development scheme.
The assistance will enable beneficiaries to take up dairy farming, augment their family income, promote livestock rearing, and create self-employment, he said.
Later, welfare assistance worth ₹15.08 lakh was distributed to 33 fishermen beneficiaries at Manamelkudi in Aranthangi.
Two new mobile fair price shops were inaugurated at Panniyur and Karungadu villages in Avudaiyarkoil to benefit Panniyur, Pazhanthamarai, Karungadu and Thumbaimalar villages. The shops are expected to help residents, who previously had to travel around 1.5 km to buy essential commodities.
