CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — What was meant to be a routine pack-up in the dark turned into a literal shock for a 23-year-old food cart vendor after a sudden restoration of power electrocuted her during a rainfall on Monday evening.

The victim survived the 7:30 p.m. incident outside the San Agustin Parish Church and is currently in stable condition at the Valencia Sanitarium Hospital, sustaining injuries to her abdomen and toes.

In a report on Tuesday, Lt. Col. Bryan Panganiban, Valencia City Police Station chief, said the incident occurred during a local blackout when an overhead electrical wire snapped and fell onto a row of food carts.

A 41-year-old female witness told investigators that several vendors had carefully moved the wires to the ground to prevent any accidents.

However, the quick thinking was undone by unfortunate timing. As heavy rains poured, the victim was stepping down from her cart to pack her belongings when the electricity abruptly returned to the grid, surging through the grounded wire and electrocuting her.

Police personnel immediately responded to the scene and coordinated with the First Bukidnon Electric Cooperative (FIBECO) to secure the area and repair the hazardous electrical line.

The victim’s 57-year-old father rushed to the Valencia City Police Station to report the incident after securing medical attention for his daughter.
