Sibonga motorcycle crash kills 38-year-old rider

CEBU CITY, Philippines — A motorcycle rider was killed in a head-on collision with another motorcycle in Sibonga, Cebu, at around 7:30 a.m. on Friday, August 7.

Police said the parties involved have agreed to settle the matter and no longer pursue the case in court.

The crash occurred along the Vegetable Highway in Purok 8, Barangay Kaulusan, Basak, Sibonga, a mountainous area. It killed a 38-year-old resident of Barangay Sayao.

In an interview on Sunday, August 9, Sibonga Municipal Police Station chief Police Major Michael Calaurian said both riders were laborers on their way to work when the collision occurred.

Head-on collision

According to the police report, the 38-year-old fatality was driving a red RUSI MC 125 from Sitio Ongka in Barangay Sayao toward the Vegetable Highway.

The other rider, a resident of Barili, Cebu, was driving a RUSI Bolt 125 with a minor as backrider.

Police said the 38-year-old rider made a right turn toward the Barili-bound road upon reaching the area but encroached into the opposite lane.

The other motorcycle was approaching from the opposite direction when the two vehicles collided head-on.

The impact threw both drivers and the passenger from their respective motorcycles.

All three were taken to Carcar City District Hospital for medical treatment. However, the 38-year-old rider died from severe head injuries.

Police records showed that neither driver had a valid driver’s license at the time of the incident.

Parties reach settlement

Quoting the outcome of their initial investigation, Calaurian said both drivers were not speeding when the crash occurred. Neither was under the influence of alcohol, as both were on their way to work.

The two motorcycles involved in the crash are currently at the Sibonga Municipal Police Station for proper disposition and further investigation.

Calaurian said both parties agreed to settle the matter on Saturday, particularly since they are blood relatives.
