Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud on Sunday (August 9, 2026) urged Congress workers to draw inspiration from the historic Quit India Movement and renew their commitment to protecting the Constitution, democracy, secularism and social justice.

Speaking at a programme marking the 84th anniversary of the Quit India Movement at the Gandhi Bhavan, Mr. Goud said the ideals and sacrifices of the freedom struggle remain relevant even today. The event was jointly organised by the Telangana Pradesh Congress Seva Dal, led by its president Middela Jitender, along with Gandhi Global Family and Gandhi Gyan Pratishthan.
Paying tributes to freedom fighters, the TPCC chief recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s historic “Do or Die” call of August 8, 1942, which became a turning point in India’s struggle for Independence. He said the movement united people across the country against British colonial rule and inspired millions to participate in the freedom movement.
Mr. Goud noted that thousands of freedom fighters endured imprisonment, police repression and hardships, while many laid down their lives for the nation. The Quit India Movement, he said, remains a symbol of the Congress party’s historic role in securing India’s freedom and mobilising ordinary citizens in every part of the country.
He stressed that the sacrifices of leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, along with countless freedom fighters, should continue to inspire future generations. While previous generations fought to free the country from colonial rule, the present generation has a responsibility to defend constitutional values and democratic institutions, he said.
“The Constitution is the guiding force of our nation, democracy is its strength and secularism is the foundation of India’s unity,” Mr. Goud said. He urged citizens to safeguard fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, equality, social justice, religious freedom and civil liberties.
Calling upon Congress workers to remain closely connected with the people, he said they should work at the grassroots level, address public concerns and raise awareness about constitutional rights. He also praised Middela Jitender and the Telangana Pradesh Congress Seva Dal for their efforts and called for expanding the organisation’s presence across villages, mandals and constituencies in the state.
A major attraction of the celebrations was a large-scale exhibition showcasing Mahatma Gandhi’s life and legacy. The exhibition featured 1,500 Gandhi statues and 150 charkhas, symbolising Gandhi’s contribution to the freedom movement. A special visual presentation portraying Gandhi’s ideals, sacrifices and leadership, along with a giant charkha installation, drew enthusiastic response from visitors.
Among others, the programme was attended by Gandhi Global Family chairman Gunna Rajender Reddy. Ministers including Konda Surekha, Ponnam Prabhakar, Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Mohammed Azharuddin and Vakati Srihari visited the exhibition.
