Tiruchi Corporation has planned to demolish and reconstruct the Amma Unavagam near the Uzhavar Sandhai in Anna Nagar to improve access to the newly opened integrated sports club behind the canteen.
According to Corporation sources, the canteen is proposed to be demolished, and a new one built at a nearby location. The move is aimed at providing direct access from the main road to the integrated sports club.
An arch entrance to the sports club is proposed to be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹35 lakh. An estimate was being prepared for the new Amma Unavagam, sources said.
The Amma Unavagam provides breakfast and lunch at subsidised rates. The canteen near the Uzhavar Sandhai attracts a considerable number of people due to its location and is considered one of the better-functioning Amma Unavagams in the city.
There are 11 Amma Unavagams in Tiruchi at Anna Nagar, Srirangam, Jaganathapuram, Junction, Kamaraj Nagar, Puthur, Viragupettai, Kuppankulam, Salai Road, Mela Kalkandarkottai, and Woraiyur.
Most of the canteens are operating from old buildings and require regular maintenance and strengthening work. Though the Corporation allocates about ₹1 crore every year for the maintenance of Amma Unavagams across the city, officials say the amount is insufficient to meet the requirements.
Major upgrade
Following a survey of the canteens, the Corporation has sanctioned ₹67 lakh for the redevelopment and upgrade of 10 Amma Unavagams in the city.
The Amma Unavagam in Srirangam was recently renovated at a cost of around ₹15 lakh. The work includes restoration of non-functional toilets and re-laying of damaged flooring on the premises.
Corporation officials said maintenance and improvement work would be taken up based on the condition of individual canteens in a phased manner.
