Visayas grid under yellow alert again

MANILA, Philippines — Thin power supply in the Visayas persisted on Monday, prompting the grid operator to impose a three-hour yellow alert.

In an advisory, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said the alert status will be in effect from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

As of 8 a.m., the available capacity was 2,350 megawatts (MW) while peak demand was 2,276 MW.

Outages at large coal plants and limited power imports from Mindanao still drove the new yellow alert.

The Visayas grid, which heavily relies from power imports from Luzon and Mindanao, has been suffering from tight electricity supply for months.

Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Sharon Garin earlier said that while the Visayas has many renewable energy power plants, it still needs steadier backing from baseload assets.

A yellow alert indicates that available power reserves are thinning, meaning any unexpected plant outage could trigger service interruptions. /pai
