LEGAZPI CITY — An alleged leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed, and four high-powered firearms were seized, in one of two separate encounters between government troops and communist rebels in Pio Duran, Albay.

The Army’s 49th Infantry Battalion, operating under the 901st Infantry Brigade, battled armed groups in separate firefights in Barangays Matanglad and Buyo on Friday, July 18, as part of ongoing security operations against the remaining communist insurgents in the province.

Troops recovered four high-powered firearms and other war materiel after the encounters.

Brig. Gen. Emil Cruz, commander of the 901st Infantry Brigade, identified the fatality as Nelson Nuyda, alias “Chubby,” who was allegedly a committee member of KLG1, SRC3, BRPC.

“The success of this operation shows the government’s sustained campaign against the communist terrorist group. We will continue our operations until the remaining NPA members in Albay are neutralized,” Cruz said in a statement.

He also urged the remaining NPA members to surrender and begin peaceful lives with their families./coa
