      # Reuters: U.S. âBipartisan Majorityâ Wants Regulatory Crackdown on Social Media. We Also Think Social Media Is Fun

Americans of all political stripes agree: we want the government to beat up on social media. Then we want to laugh about it while watching it all happen on social media, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos survey.

In response to the two statements, “Social media companies need more government oversight” and “The law should require social media companies to use age-verification tools,” the majority of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all agree. The smallest majority Reuters reported in this section of the survey was independents answering the question about “more government oversight.” Only 52% of that group agreed. The largest majority, at 74%, was of Republicans answering the question about age verification.

In further eye-popping stats, Reuters says the sizes of the groups who think social media can be a) addictive for children, and b) harmful to children’s mental health are both 85%. 52% said they’re on social media for too much of the day, while 43% said they weren’t. Only 35% of respondents told Reuters/Ipsos that being on social media made them stressed âout.

The poll was conducted online, and Reuters notes that it occurred from July 29-August 3. It surveyed 4,505 U.S. adults, and has a 2% margin of error.

Funnily enough, 70% of respondents said spending time on social media was fun.
