Red alert hits Visayas, Mindanao on August 10

MANILA, Philippines — Households in Visayas and Mindanao grids may face power outages on Monday as both grids suffer from insufficient electricity supply.

In an advisory late afternoon, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said a red alert over the Visayas would be up from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A yellow alert would then be in effect from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This, as the Visayas saw reduced power imports from Mindanao, as the latter was also dealing with high demand. The Visayas is heavily dependent on electricity supply from the other two main islands.

Given the higher projected demand, the grid operator has also placed Mindanao under red alert from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The grid operator also declared a yellow alert over Mindanao from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

In a yellow alert, the power supply can still meet demand, but it will serve as a warning that when a plant breaks down one way or another, it will result in brownouts. A red alert signals insufficient power supply to meet demand, raising the risk of rotational brownouts unless demand is curtailed. /pai
