Tower of Colombia’s tallest cathedral collapses after 7.4-magnitude earthquake

A cathedral tower in Colombia collapsed following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the north-west of the country on Monday (10 August).

Footage circulated on social media showed one of the side towers of Manizales' iconic cathedral collapsed following the quake. Its facade was visibly damaged, and debris was scattered on the streets nearby.

The Catedral Basílica Metropolitana Nuestra Senora del Rosario is the tallest cathedral in Colombia.

Data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) showed that 7.4 and 5.0-magnitude earthquakes struck western Columbia on Monday.

Injuries and structural damage were reported in several cities, including Quibdo, Cali, Pereira and Manizales.
