Northern Marianas' Carol Lee wins her first WTA title

Northern Marianas tennis player Carol Lee won the Warsaw T-Mobile Polish Open in Warsaw, Poland, on Saturday.

She secured her first WTA title with a thrilling 6-4, 7-5 victory over Czech Republic's Gabriela Knutson in the final.

The Marianas Variety reported Lee maintained absolute poise under pressure.

Breaking early in the opening set to build momentum, Lee fended off late break points to close out the set, 6-4.

The second set proved to be a battle of attrition. With both players trading service holds deep into the set, Lee's sharp return game and aggressive depth forced key errors at 5-5, allowing her to serve out the match at 7-5 and seal the historic victory.

"My mindset was to approach the final the same way I've approached every match this week - stay focused, fight for every point, and just enjoy the match," Lee told Marianas Variety.

"It feels rewarding to be performing at this level, especially because I know how much work has gone into getting here.

"Over the past year, I've been gaining more experience competing at higher-level tournaments, and I feel like I'm becoming more comfortable and confident that I belong at this level."

She said her inspiration was thinking of the people she represented, the island where her tennis journey first began.

"Saipan is where everything started for me, practicing at the [American Memorial Park] tennis courts with my dad, and no matter where in the world I'm competing, I always carry my home with me," she said.

"Growing up on a small island and now being able to represent the Northern Mariana Islands on an international stage is something I'm really proud of."

Lee said her support team kept her grounded.

That included her family and support network back home, who she said kept her grounded through the grinding swings of the professional tour.

"I'm grateful to my family, my team, my sponsors, and everyone back home in Saipan and the NMI who continues to believe in me and support me," she said.

She also highlighted the financial backing of her corporate sponsor Brabu Behavioral Health Services, whose support has helped fuel her international travel and tournament play.

"Their financial support has helped me continue pursuing my career and competing internationally, and I'm incredibly grateful for the trust they have placed in me and my goals," Lee added.

Lee said her WTA title is a reward for past adversity and a launching pad for future appearances on the sport's grandest stages.

"There have been so many ups and downs, adversities and lessons along the way, so to finally have a moment like this makes all of that work feel even more meaningful," Lee stated.

"I'm also really proud of how I competed throughout the entire week. I enjoyed playing every match this week. More than anything, I feel extremely grateful."
