Researchers looking to join India’s premier research ecosystem now have additional time to apply for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026. The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline from July 15 to August 15, giving candidates more time to submit proposals and complete formalities.
The scheme aims to bring accomplished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, technologists and professionals working abroad to leading Indian institutions for high-impact research.
WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE SCHEME?
The PMRC Scheme is designed for Indian-origin researchers currently working with reputed overseas universities, laboratories, research institutions or industries.
Applicants are divided into three categories:
- Young Research Fellows (YRF): Researchers with less than five years of post-PhD experience.
- Senior Fellows (SF): Researchers with five to less than 10 years of post-PhD experience.
- Research Chairs (RC): Eminent researchers with 10 years or more of post-PhD experience and proven research leadership.
Eligible host institutions include top-ranked government higher education institutions and national research laboratories.
THE FUNDING PACKAGE THAT STANDS OUT
The scheme provides financial support through fellowship amounts, research grants, relocation assistance and institutional support.
Young Research Fellows can receive:
- Annual fellowship: Rs 15 lakh–Rs 20 lakh
- Research grant: Rs 1 crore–Rs 1.5 crore
- Residential and medical allowance: Rs 5 lakh annually
- Relocation benefit: Rs 30 lakh
- Institute overheads: Rs 20 lakh annually
Senior Fellows can receive:
- Annual fellowship: Rs 20 lakh–Rs 40 lakh
- Research grant: Rs 1.5 crore–Rs 2.5 crore
- Residential and medical allowance: Rs 9 lakh annually
- Relocation benefit: Rs 40 lakh
- Institute overheads: Rs 30 lakh annually
Research Chairs can receive:
- Annual fellowship: Rs 40 lakh–Rs 60 lakh
- Research grant: Rs 3 crore–Rs 5 crore
- Residential and medical allowance: Rs 15 lakh annually
- Relocation benefit: Rs 50 lakh
- Institute overheads: Rs 1 crore annually
AUGUST 15 IS THE FINAL CALL
The PMRC Scheme will support research in areas such as advanced computing, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, healthcare, climate change, biotechnology, space, defence and other national priority sectors.
