Several Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad workers were detained after clashing with the police during a march towards the Jharkhand Assembly. They were protesting against the use of lathis and tear gas on students a day earlier during a demonstration over alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive examinations for government jobs.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad is the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the parent organisation of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The detentions came as the BJP called for a statewide bandh from 8 am to midnight on Tuesday to protest against the police action.

In response to Monday’s march, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, whose Jharkhand Mukti Morcha heads the government, said that he respected the students’ right to raise their concerns. Their demands would be addressed with seriousness and sensitivity, he said. Read on.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Union government to abolish the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for medical admissions. The resolution also urged the Centre to allow the state to admit students to medical colleges based on their Class 12 marks. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s lone MLA opposed the resolution and walked out before the vote.

The resolution said irregularities in the 2026 exam had caused “untold mental agony” among students and undermined their trust, after the exam was cancelled and a re-examination held. NEET is a requisite for students to secure admission to undergraduate medical courses in India.

The Supreme Court has said that it cannot set a timeline for appellate tribunals hearing challenges to deletions from electoral rolls in West Bengal during the special intensive revision. However, the court asked the Election Commission to provide details of cases disposed of and pending before the tribunals.
