LUCENA CITY – Taal Volcano in Batangas generated another minor phreatomagmatic eruption on Tuesday afternoon, marking the fourth such event recorded this month, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In a bulletin, Phivolcs reported that the eruption occurred at the Main Crater at 2:29 p.m. and lasted for about three minutes, based on seismic, infrasound, and visual observations.

The eruption produced ash-laden, steam-rich plumes that rose approximately 2,000 meters above the crater before drifting southeast, as observed through the crater’s Internet Protocol (IP) camera.

Phivolcs data showed similar minor phreatomagmatic eruptions were recorded on July 17 (one minute), July 16 (two and a half minutes), and July 12 (three minutes).

The agency explained that a phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when magma comes into contact with water, triggering explosive steam-driven activity that ejects ash, steam, and fragmented volcanic material.

Despite the latest eruption, Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, indicating a low level of volcanic unrest.

Phivolcs reiterated that entry into Taal Volcano Island, boating on Taal Lake, and flying aircraft near the volcano remain prohibited because of the risks posed by sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and hazardous volcanic gas emissions./coa
