The Kozhikode Corporation is awaiting a detailed project report (DPR) from the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) to proceed with its plan to conduct a carbon audit of the city as part of efforts to control air pollution.

The civic body plans to conduct the audit with the support of institutions such as the CWRDM and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA).

The CWRDM has already submitted an initial proposal for the project. However, Corporation officials said the DPR was a major next step in finalising the audit plan.

“We are in contact with them. But the CWRDM is yet to submit the DPR. Once it is submitted, the Corporation will prepare a detailed plan for conducting the carbon audit and implement it,” an official said.

Earlier, while presenting the Corporation Budget for 2026-27, deputy mayor S. Jayasree had announced that the audit would be done at regular intervals. An initial sum of ₹10 lakh was also allocated in the Budget to implement projects aimed at improving air quality based on the findings of the studies.

The audit, according to Corporation officials, is expected to assess the city’s carbon emissions from various sectors. The findings are expected to help the civic body identify major sources of emissions and formulate targeted interventions to reduce its carbon footprint.

The audit would provide baseline data for tracking changes in air quality. The data generated through the audit is expected to support future urban planning initiatives and climate-resilient development projects in the city.

Further, as per the Budget proposal, a project titled ‘Haritha Residence’ will be formulated and implemented with the cooperation of residents’ associations. The initiative is expected to improve air and water quality within the Corporation limits.

The Budget has also proposed renovating Mananchira under the City Beautification project and transforming it into the city’s natural “oxygen parlour”.
