OpenAI has announced a preview release of the official ChatGPT Desktop app for Linux.

Compared to using ChatGPT in a browser tab, the GUI desktop app can run Codex in your local repos, hook into your other apps (via extensions) for ChatGPT Work related tasks and probe your local files without you having to upload anything elsewhere first.

ChatGPT desktop for Linux joins Anthropic’s Claude desktop app for Linux, which entered beta last month.

This announcement is about an official version of its full-fat desktop GUI app. You’ve no doubt seen plenty of unofficial wrappers around ChatGPT before now, and command-line access was already available via the Codex CLI.

You can download the ChatGPT for Linux app for Ubuntu, as OpenAI provide 64-bit Intel/AMD and Arm64 .deb installer. It says the app has been tested on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, well as on Debian 13. RPM builds are available Fedora 43 & 44.

This is closed-source software, and if it’s anything like the macOS and Windows versions, it’ll run as well as syrup up hill.
