Rotational brownouts to hit 105 areas in Metro Cebu on Aug. 12

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Consumers in Metro Cebu on Wednesday, Aug. 12, will face another round of rotational brownouts as the Visayas grid has been placed under red alert once more.

Power distributor Visayan Electric Company (Veco), in an advisory, warned that it will implement rotational brownouts in a total of 105 areas in its franchise area.

It covers the cities of Cebu, Talisay, Mandaue, Naga and the towns of Liloan, Consolacion and Minglanilla.

Below is an hour-by-hour schedule of areas that may experience outages between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Areas listed include:

• 1-2 p.m.: portions of Banilad and Talamban in Cebu City, and Banilad and Cabancalan in Mandaue City.
• 2-3 p.m.: portions of Bakilid, Casuntingan and Maguikay in Mandaue City, and Camputhaw, Cogon Ramos, Lorega and Zapatera in Cebu City.
• 3-4 p.m.: portions of Cansaga, Jugan, Lamac, Pitogo and Poblacion Oriental in Consolacion; Yati in Liloan; and a wide swath of southern Cebu City including Basak San Nicolas, Buhisan, Calamba, Ermita, Labangon, Mambaling, Pahina Central, Pahina San Nicolas, Pamutan, Punta Princesa, San Nicolas Proper, Sawang Calero, Tisa and Toong.
• 4-5 p.m.: portions of Apas, Kasambagan and Lahug, plus additional areas in Cebu City’s Duljo Fatima, Ermita, Mambaling, Pahina Central, Pasil, San Nicolas Proper, San Roque, Sawang Calero, Suba and Tisa; Poblacion in Consolacion; and Lataban, San Roque, San Vicente, Sta. Cruz, Tabla and Yati in Liloan.
• 5-6 p.m.: portions of Minglanilla, Talisay City and additional barangays in Cebu City, including Bulacao, Inayawan, Mambaling, San Roque and Toong.
• 6-7 p.m.: portions of Liloan, Consolacion and Cebu City’s Camputhaw and Capitol Site.
• 7-8 p.m.: portions of Cebu City including Camputhaw, Capitol Site, Guadalupe, Kalunasan, Sapangdaku, Mabolo and North Reclamation Area; several barangays in Mandaue City; and portions of Naga City and Minglanilla.

On Wednesday, available capacity across the Visayas Grid stood at 2,153 megawatts (MW), according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

The supply, however, fell short of the day’s projected peak demand of 2,394 MW.

A red alert is declared when power demand exceeds available supply, leaving the grid without a buffer to absorb unexpected plant shutdowns or demand spikes.

NGCP placed the Visayas Grid on red alert from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with yellow alerts, indicating a thinner but still adequate supply margin, in effect from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
