BJP State unit president Nainar Nagenthran, on Tuesday (July 21, 2026), termed as “not civilised”, the action of a police officer making aggressive gestures and threatening journalists in Thoothukudi when they attempted to get the comments of arrested Vilathikulam DMK MLA G.V. Markandayan, on Monday evening.

Mr. Nagenthran said police personnel should maintain dignity in their actions. “The khakhi uniform is seen with dignity and respect. If a police officer behaves like a rowdy in public place, it will affect the reputation of the police force. When the trust on the police force is gradually eroding due to the recent lock-up deaths, the police personnel should maintain decorum,” he said.

The BJP leader urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to ensure the police force is utilised properly and did not act against the basic rights of the media, a significant pillar of democracy.
