The session read

The Ibovespa eased 2.50%, with breadth negative — 1 of 15 names higher. Consumer Staples led, while Utilities lagged.

MASP opens its doors for free this evening on the Paulista ridge

Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) runs its free Friday-evening policy on a Wednesday this week — an unadvertised midweek gift. Entry is gratis from 18h to 21h (last entry 20h) at Avenida Paulista 1578, Bela Vista.

The permanent collection of European masters hangs in Lina Bo Bardi’s cavaletes, floating in the vast open hall. Post-work crowds will be thinner than on a standard free Tuesday, making the viewing properly calm.

Full admission on other days runs R$85, so tonight saves you the price of a good dinner. Take the Metrô Linha 2–Verde to Trianon-MASP; the station exit leaves you 20 metres from the door.

After the gallery, walk two blocks west to the Japan House São Paulo on Paulista 52. It is open until 18h (free), meaning you catch the last 30 minutes of the current design exhibition before MASP even opens its evening doors.

For a precise daytime warm-up, enter the Japan House between 16h30 and 17h30. The clean timber space offers strong Wi-Fi and a calm place to send a few emails before the art shift.

OUTDOORS — IBIRAPUERA IN THE COOL

Parque Ibirapuera is open from 5h to midnight and entry is free. With the high at 24°C and zero rain, this is the stretch of the week when the park is actually usable without sweating through a shirt.

Rent a city bike at the entrance on Av Pedro Álvares Cabral and take the marked loop along the lake to the Museu Afro Brasil side. The jogging track is quiet on Wednesday mornings — you will have long sections to yourself until about 9h30.

MAC USP sits inside the park and stays open until 21h on Tuesdays through Sundays, also free. A post-run walk through the modern-print floor gives you air-conditioning and a culture fix without a museum queue.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — JARDINS & PINHEIROS

For a morning laptop session, try Urbe Café on Rua Haddock Lobo in Jardins. The back terrace is shaded until noon, wi-fi is stable, and a flat white runs about R$14.

In Pinheiros, Pato Rei on Rua Mourato Coelho offers a long communal counter with power sockets and specialty Brazilian roasts. It fills with nomads by 10h, so arrive early to claim a spot.

For proper coworking with a day pass, GoHub on Rua Lisboa has desks at R$85. Walk-ins are accepted on Wednesdays; the rooftop space has a clear signal and a view over the neighbourhood.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — QUIET PLAZA & A STEAK

If the Paulista crowds do not appeal, shift the whole day to Centro. Pinacoteca de São Paulo (Praça da Luz 2, Bom Retiro) is open from 10h to 18h — entry R$40, and the Pina Luz building alone is worth two hours.

The Jardim da Luz next door is a sculptural garden with free entry and few tourists on a weekday. Sit on the stone benches under the jacarandas with a coffee from the museum café.

End the afternoon with a late lunch at Casa do Porco on Rua Araújo in República. The tasting menu runs R$180 and weekdays do not normally require a booking at 4pm walk-in.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

Once MASP closes at 21h, cross the avenue to the bar at Selva on Rua Augusta. The mezzanine has low lighting and a solid cachaça list; a caipirinha runs R$32.

A quieter option is Tan Tan Noodle Bar in Pinheiros — it serves until midnight and the house ramen is R$58. The counter seats are made for solo diners.

For a drink with a view of the Pinheiros skyline, head to Mirante 9 de Julho on Rua dos Pinheiros. It fills after 21h with a mixed Brazilian crowd; the rooftop is open-air and cash-free — take your Pix-ready phone.

04 Getting Around TRANSPORT

The single-journey Metrô fare is R$5.40. Linhas 1–Azul, 2–Verde, 3–Vermelha, and 4–Amarela are all running on a weekday timetable with no reported major delays on the morning check. CPTM services are normal on all lines heading into Centro.

Today’s rodízio applies to vehicles with plates ending in 5 and 6. The restriction runs from 07h to 10h and 17h to 20h in the Expanded Centre. Plan your taxi or app ride outside those windows for a faster trip through the inner ring.

05 Where to Eat LUNCH & DINNER

Lunch: A quick bowl at Ibirapuera’s Prêt no Parque (R$45 set lunch) keeps you near MAC USP. For a sit-down in Jardins, book a table at Le Jazz on Rua dos Pinheiros — the three-course plat du jour costs R$68 and the dining room is half-full by 13h.

Dinner: Post-MASP, walk 300 metres to Coco Bambu on Alameda Santos for grilled fish plates from R$95 — the mezzanine seats solo diners without a fuss. In Pinheiros, the chef’s counter at Cora on Rua Mateus Grou serves a six-course tasting menu at R$190 and takes walk-ins on Wednesday nights.

06 Practical Info GOOD TO KNOW

Carry a light jacket for the evening breeze and your Pix-enabled smartphone — most bars and cafés inside the ring now refuse cash. The museum coat-check at MASP is free but the queue builds by 18h30, so pack light.

MASP’s free-evening entry does not require a ticket, but you must pass through a bag scanner. Large backpacks are not allowed in the galleries.

On Avenida Paulista after dark, stay on the well-lit museum and restaurant side of the avenue; avoid using a phone in sight near the Parque Trianon underpass after 20h.

07 Community & Lifestyle FOR NEWCOMERS

The São Paulo Digital Nomads WhatsApp group runs an informal midweek coffee meet at Pato Rei in Pinheiros most Wednesdays around 10h30 — no RSVP, just turn up and ask the barista. The Internations São Paulo chapter has a free social evening scheduled for Friday at a bar in Itaim Bibi; check the app for the exact venue as it tends to shift.

Newcomers who want to kick off their Brazilian network can drop by the free street-samba circle at Beco do Batman on Saturday afternoon (the Beco itself is an alley, always open). No Portuguese required — just bring a can of Skol from the corner vendor and stand near the drummers.

08 Game Day MIDWEEK QUIET — NO FIXTURES TODAY

No Campeonato Brasileiro or Sul-Americana fixtures fall on this Wednesday. The São Paulo big three — Corinthians, Palmeiras, and São Paulo FC — resume training with weekend matches at the Morumbi and Allianz Parque on Saturday.

For the diary: Corinthians host Fortaleza at Neo Química Arena on Saturday at 18h30. The best expat watch-point is O’Malley’s in Itaim Bibi, which shows every Série A match across four screens.

A smaller, Portuguese-heavy crowd gathers at Bar do Luiz Fernandes in Santana for the pre-match — a proper old-school boteco with R$12 draft beer and no cover. Arrive by 17h30 to get a standing table.

09 Business & Markets WEEK IN FIGURES

A broad risk-off wave swept across major Americas exchanges in the last settled session, sending Latin American benchmarks into the red alongside Wall Street. The session opened weak and stayed that way, with few sectors escaping the selling.

Traders pointed to a firming of the yield environment and a modest dip in precious metals as signals that money moved to the sidelines rather than into alternatives. Commodity-linked currencies came under broad pressure, while the dollar basket barely budged — a classic wait-and-see posture.

The mood among São Paulo-based fund managers this morning is cautious but not panicked. With the 10-year US yield slipping slightly, analysts expect a quieter session when markets reopen, though eyes remain fixed on the corporate earnings calendar later in the week.

10 Plan Ahead THE WEEK

THE DAYS AHEAD

WED 12 — Free evening at MASP 18h–21h; dry, 24°C — a perfect gallery evening

THU 13 — Sunny 25°C — Pinacoteca full day (R$40) and a lunch at Mercadão

FRI 14 — 26°C, no rain all day — outdoor tables in Vila Madalena from 17h

SAT 15 — Free-entry Saturday at Pinacoteca, 27°C — then Beco do Batman samba circle 15h

SUN 16 — 27°C sunshine — morning at Ibirapuera, free MAC USP until 21h

Normally yes — the standard ticket is R$85 and Tuesday is the regular free day. However on this specific Wednesday, 12 August, MASP is offering free entry from 18h to 21h with last admission at 20h.

This is a one-off evening opening that mirrors the weekly free Friday-night slot. Walk straight to the security desk on the ground floor — no booking is required.

What plates are restricted in the rodízio today and at what times?

On Wednesday, 12 August, the São Paulo municipal rodízio restricts cars with licence plates ending in 5 and 6 from driving in the Expanded Centre during peak hours.

The morning restriction is 07h00 to 10h00 and the evening restriction is 17h00 to 20h00. If your plate ends in another digit, you are free to drive anywhere in the city all day.

Which museums are open late tonight, and are any of them free?

MASP is free from 18h to 21h today, making it the clear late pick. MAC USP in Ibirapuera is also open until 21h with free entry every day, and it requires no ticket.

Farol Santander in Centro stays open until 20h (R$45) with the sky deck lit after dark. Pinacoteca closes at 18h, so do not plan that one for tonight.
