HBO has cast Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart for the second season of its upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation, adding one of the wizarding world’s most flamboyant professors to the series’ growing ensemble. The casting was confirmed on August 11, with Hoult set to play the celebrated wizard whose reputation far exceeds his actual magical abilities.

Lockhart is introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as Hogwarts’ new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. He presents himself as a celebrated adventurer and bestselling author, with an impressive collection of awards and supposed heroic exploits behind him. Harry, Ron and Hermione gradually discover that Lockhart’s public image has been carefully constructed around other wizards’ achievements.

Kenneth Branagh previously portrayed the character in the 2002 film adaptation of Chamber of Secrets. Hoult will now bring his own version of the vain, charismatic professor to the HBO series, which is being developed as a more expansive adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga.

The casting gives Hoult another major franchise role after his recent appearance as Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman. His other recent credits include The Great, Nosferatu and Juror No. 2, adding a particularly interesting wrinkle to his move into Hogwarts, where Lockhart’s polished public persona requires an actor capable of balancing charm with increasingly obvious incompetence.

Hoult will join the new generation of Harry Potter actors led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The first season also features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

HBO has already renewed the series for a second season, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, consists of eight episodes and is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.

The series is being written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod serving as an executive producer and directing multiple episodes. HBO has described the project as a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s books, with each season intended to explore the wizarding world in greater detail. With Hoult now joining the cast, Season 2 has begun filling out one of the most recognisable ensembles from the original books.
