The teaser of Channing Tatum’s upcoming film, Josephine, was unveiled by the makers on August 11. Written and directed by Beth de Araújo, the film also stars Gemma Chan, Mason Reeves, Philip Ettinger and Syra McCarthy in pivotal roles.

The teaser mostly features visuals without much reliance on dialogues but builds tension with its grim tone. Tatum and Chan play parents of an 8-year-old, who witnesses a crime one day leading to a sudden emotional upheaval in the family. She is questioned by the cops as her parents deal with the after-effects of the trauma. At one point, an adult asks the kid, “If what you say you saw was so bad, why did you just watch from behind a tree?”

The film’s official synopsis reads, “After eight-year-old Josephine accidentally witnesses a crime in Golden Gate Park, she begins to act out violently to protect herself. This emotional trauma leads to conflicts between her parents as they search for justice, and a way to feel safe again.”

It marks the second feature of Beth after the psychological thriller, Soft & Quiet (2022). Josephine won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and has generated major awards buzz this season. The film was was screened at Berlin International Film Festival and will continue its festival run next month at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Josephine is produced by Araújo, Tatum, Chan, David Kaplan, Josh Peters, Marina Stabile, Mark H. Rapaport and Crystine Zhang, with Emanuel Nuñez and Jordan Rapaport serving as executive producers. It will be released in theatres on November 20.
