Despite years of radio silence, it seems that Netflix’s live-action Yu Yu Hakusho remake is coming back for a second season. According to a report by Tokyo Sports, the new season is set to begin filming this fall and will adapt up through the Demon World Unification Tournament arc.

The show's first season was released on Dec. 14, 2023, and met a somewhat mixed response. While it was praised for elaborate fight sequences that did a surprisingly good job of channeling its battle shonen source material, the show attempted to cram more than half of the source material (66 episodes of the anime and 112 chapters of the manga) into only five episodes. As a result, the Netflix show felt quite emotionally empty compared to its source material.

If Tokyo Sports’ report is accurate, it seems that the second season of the Netflix show will run into the same problem. The Demon World Unification Tournament is the final arc of the series, meaning this next season of the live-action show will adapt the rest of the story, which comprises 46 anime episodes and 63 manga chapters.

Takumi Kitamura will return to play the main character, Yusuke Urameshi. Shun Oguri (Gintama, Lupin the 3rd), Nobuaki Kaneko (Song of the Samurai), Mirai Moriyama (Penance), and Mizuki Yamamoto (The Kirishima Thing) are joining the project as “inhabitants of the demon world.”

For those unfamiliar with Yu Yu Hakusho, the series follows Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who dies in a traffic accident while saving a child, earning him a second chance at life as a spirit detective. Honestly, Yusuke's job doesn’t actually involve very much detective work: the series Follows this headstrong hero as he battles foes who want to undo the fragile balance between the Human, Spirit, and Demon Worlds. The manga by Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter x Hunter) ran from 1990 to 1994, while the anime aired between 1992 and 1995. It is considered a seminal work for the battle shonen genre, and the anime was well-received at the time it aired.

That series is set to return in 2027 with a third season that will adapt the Alabasta arc.
