When faced with endless miles of repetitive surfaces and scenery during a long drive, directions to the next service station can be a welcome distraction.

And while many sites look the same, there are some interesting quirks from Britain's best McDonald's to local farm shops that can help break up a journey.

Today, a Transport Focus survey found the A30 which runs between London and Cornwall is ranked Britain's best A road, with a 79 per cent satisfaction score.

The watchdog added that Kent's M20 was ranked the favourite motorway, with a satisfaction rating of 79 per cent. The M5, A19 and M56 were also in the top five.

Here is a look at the country's top five most popular major roads - and what you can find at some of the top ranked service stations on each one:

1. A30

The A30, which runs between west London and Cornwall, was ranked the best A road in Britain in the Transport Focus survey, with a 79 per cent satisfaction score.

The 284-mile road has two major motorway-style service stations – the Cornwall Services near Bodmin and the Hog and Hedge near Okehampton in Devon.

Cornwall services, the only major service station in the county, has an average TripAdvisor rating of 3.9 stars and has previously won its Travellers' Choice award.

It has a large range of brands on offer including Subway, Costa, Greggs, Taco Bell and Co-Op – as well as clothing retailers Mountain Warehouse and Saltrock.

There is a Holiday Inn Express hotel – and the McDonald's was crowned the highest rated across the UK according to TripAdvisor reviews compiled in a 2024 study.

Further along the A30, the Hog and Hedge on the edge of Dartmoor is a highly-rated independent site known for locally sourced fresh food, coffee and rustic seating.

The services have a 4.2 average review on TripAdvisor, with one visitor writing: 'Nice smallish service station.' Another said: 'Best service station I've ever visited.'

2. M20

The M20 which runs through Kent was ranked the country's favourite motorway in the new Transport Focus survey, with a satisfaction rating of 79 per cent.

But the same perhaps cannot be said of its service stations, with the only one on the latest Which? study being the Roadchef at Maidstone which placed 58th out of 92.

The services got just one star for price of goods in shops and food outlets; range and quality of food and drink outlets; and availability and quality of outdoor space.

The site at junction eight got its best rating for convenience and accessibility, but this was still only three stars – and it had an overall customer score of 42 per cent.

Maidstone features a Costa and McDonald's, both of which have drive-through options, as well as a Leon, Krispy Kreme, Chozen Noodle and WH Smith.

There is also a Days Inn hotel and an Esso petrol station, and space for up to 238 cars. Parking for cars is free for the first two hours, then £21 for up to 24 hours.

One TripAdvisor review in April said: 'Good food, very clean dining area with very good staff.' But another visitor in March wrote: 'Toilets disgusting and dirty.'

The M20 also has another Roadchef service station at junction 11 for Folkestone, as well as Europe's largest truck stop at Ashford near junction 10 which opened in 2021.

3. M56

The M56, which runs for 33 miles through the Cheshire and Greater Manchester areas, is ranked Britain's second favourite motorway in the Transport Focus survey.

It has one major service station - Chester at junction 14 operated by Roadchef which has a reasonably good ranking of 28th out of 92 in the latest Which? study.

Motorists gave the 24-hour site three stars for its range and quality of shops and food and drink outlets; as well as range of facilities, cleanliness and convenience.

But they were less impressed by the availability and quality of outside space, which got two stars; and the price of goods in shops and food outlets, which got one star.

Chester features a Costa, McDonald's, Leon as well as the 'Super 8 by Wyndham Chester East' hotel, described as a 'modern, pet friendly hotel by Chester Zoo'.

Drivers can fill up at a Shell petrol station, while there is space for 387 cars which can park for free for two hours. After that, the site charges £15 for up to 24 hours.

The site has an average TripAdvisor rating of 3.1 stars, with the latest review condemning the 'disgusting place' and 'rude staff'. Another said: 'Avoid at all costs.'

A further visitor complained about the 'ridiculous' car park situation which saw them take 'forever to get out', but added: 'No complaints regarding cafeteria.'

4. M5

The M5 is Britain's fourth longest motorway at 163 miles, running south-west from the West Midlands to Devon via Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

The road is also home to the country's top-rated service station Gloucester Services, which is located between junctions 12 and 11A and known for its premium feel.

The stop operated by the Westmorland family features a scratch-cooked kitchen where food is prepared using fresh ingredients from more than 130 local producers.

Gloucester, which also has a locally-sourced farm shop, regularly tops national surveys - including the latest Which? study of Britain's top motorway service stations.

The site got five stars in nearly every category – including cleanliness; range of facilities; availability and quality of outside space; and convenience and accessibility.

The services are also pleasing on the eye, given the buildings themselves have won awards for their nature-friendly architecture to honour the surrounding landscape.

Gloucester - which has fuel provided by Esso - partners with the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, a local charity reinvesting profits into the local community.

As for the motorway itself, the M5 had a ranking of 78 per cent satisfaction from drivers in the latest Transport Focus survey – putting the road in fourth place.

5. A19

The A19 completes the top five of the best-rated major roads in Britain. It runs from Doncaster through South and North Yorkshire to Seaton Burn in Tyne and Wear.

There are eight major service stations across the 124-mile road, which runs roughly parallel to and east of the A1 – including the Wynyard Park services.

There is also a Premier Inn hotel and a BP petrol station. Free parking times vary between areas of the site, with some of the areas limited to one hour.

Another notable stop on the A19 is the Exelby services at Northallerton whose northbound site won the Forecourt Trader of the Year award in 2021.

The Shell-branded services have become known for suspending a Formula 1 Ferrari car from the ceiling, but have also been praised for their pleasant setting.
