A Wairarapa school principal is on leave, with the school board urging the community not to speculate on the reasons.

In a message to families, the Masterton Intermediate School board said it was aware of discussion about principal Russell Thompson's leave and wanted to get ahead of any possible media coverage.

"We understand this may raise questions, but the board is not able to comment on confidential employment matters or on any processes that may be underway.

"We ask that our community please refrain from speculation or discussion that may cause harm to anyone who may be involved."

It recognised it was not providing the detail that some people might be seeking, but maintained protecting the mana and privacy of those concerned was the priority.

The board said it took the safety and wellbeing of students and staff seriously and had asked the NZ School Boards Association (NZSBA) and the Ministry of Education for advice.

Ministry of Education director of education for Greater Wellington Roy Sye said support was being provided as needed.

"School boards are responsible for meeting their obligations under the Education and Training Act. The actions required will depend on the circumstances of each case, including any relevant legal and employment obligations."

Sye declined to make further comment.

A message to Thompson received an automatic reply stating he was on leave and would not be answering emails.

As of March this year, Masterton Intermediate School had 338 students.

The Teaching Council and School Boards Association have been approached.

A NZSBA spokesperson declined to comment on whether it was advising the school.

"These matters can involve confidential employment information, privacy considerations and processes that must be conducted fairly and without prejudicing any investigation."
