Driver allegedly falls asleep, rams dump truck into Toledo City homes
CEBU CITY, Philippines — A dump truck driver allegedly fell asleep while driving before his vehicle swerved into the opposite lane and rammed into several roadside properties in Toledo City, Cebu, early Wednesday morning, August 12.
The 30-year-old driver was initially arrested pending the filing of appropriate criminal charges but was released from police custody on Thursday, August 13, after he and the affected property owners reportedly agreed to settle the damage caused by the crash.
Dump truck swerves into opposite lane
The incident happened at around 3 a.m. in Sitio Dasuna, Barangay DAS, Toledo City.
According to the initial investigation by Toledo City Police Station, the driver was operating a Howo dump truck and was traveling from Brgy. Magdugo, Toledo City, toward Naga City, Cebu.
Based on the driver’s account cited in the police report, he allegedly fell asleep while driving, causing the dump truck to swerve into the opposite lane.
The truck then sideswiped a sari-sari store and hit a Yamaha motorcycle and a multicab parked along the roadside.
The motorcycle and multicab were owned by a 48-year-old resident of Sitio Dasuna, police said.
Truck rams into Toledo houses
The dump truck continued moving after hitting the roadside vehicles and eventually collided with a nearby house.
Four motorcycles and a Toyota Fortuner were parked inside the house’s garage when the truck struck the property.
Police identified the owner of the house and the vehicles as a 33-year-old resident of Sitio Dasuna.
The extent of damage to the vehicles and properties had not yet been determined when the police report was filed.
Driver injured, arrested
The dump truck driver, a resident of Barangay Cambang-ug, Toledo City, sustained injuries in the crash.
He was transported by the Barangay DAS ambulance to the Toledo City General Hospital for medical examination.
Police subsequently arrested the driver pending the filing of appropriate criminal charges.
As of Thursday, August 13, however, the driver had been released from custody after the parties involved agreed to settle the matter.
