03 What to See & Do THURSDAY IN RIO

TODAY’S PICK — CENTRO CULTURE

A free art morning between CCBB and the Paço Imperial

Start at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, on Rua Primeiro de Março in Centro. It opens at 9am, entry is free, and the galleries are cool and uncrowded on a weekday.

Walk five minutes to the Paço Imperial, open from noon and also free. The colonial building alone is worth the visit, with rotating exhibitions on the upper floors.

Take the Metrô to Uruguaiana station on lines 1 or 2. The single fare is R$7.90, and both museums are within three blocks.

For lunch, try Confeitaria Colombo on Rua Gonçalves Dias — a historic tearoom with pastries and coffee, expect around R$60–80 per person.

Keep the afternoon flexible. If the rain holds off, walk to Praça XV and catch the ferry view before heading back.

OUTDOORS — GREEN SPACE

A morning walk in Jardim Botânico before any rain

The Jardim Botânico opens at 8am daily, though Wednesdays start at 11am. Entry is R$40 for residents and R$80 for foreigners.

The palm avenue and orchid house are at their calmest before 10am. Wear comfortable shoes — the paths are long and shaded.

Bus lines from Centro and Zona Sul stop nearby on Rua Jardim Botânico. A taxi or ride app from Ipanema takes about 20 minutes.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — CENTRO AND ZONA SUL

Two reliable laptop spots for a light Thursday

In Centro, Curto Café on Rua da Assembleia has strong wifi and quiet tables until early evening. Coffee runs R$8–14.

In Botafogo, Slow Bakery on Rua São João Batista is a bright bakery with good seats and a calm mid-morning crowd. Pastries run R$12–20.

Both places work for a couple of hours of email and calls. Avoid Centro after 6pm — it empties quickly.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — COASTAL CALM

A late-afternoon walk along Copacabana and Leme

If the rain misses the city, walk the Copacabana calçadão from Posto 3 to Leme around 4pm. The sea is green-flagged and moderate today.

Stop at a quiosque for água de coco — around R$8–12 — and watch the late light. Sunset is at 5:35pm.

This is the opposite of the museum morning: open air, slow pace, and no ticket desk.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

A quiet dinner and a drink in Botafogo

Thursday nights in Rio are low-key. Botafogo is the easiest bet for a relaxed dinner without a booking.

Try Ceviche da Fabi on Rua Arnaldo Quintela for fresh ceviche, around R$60–90 per person. Arrive before 8pm to get a table.

For drinks after, head to Hocus Pocus on Rua Dezenove de Fevereiro. It opens until late and has a good local beer list.

If you want live music, check the board at Audio Rebel in Botafogo — but call ahead, as Thursday programming varies.

ALSO ON TODAY

Museu do Amanhã — Praça Mauá, Centro — open 10am–6pm, R$30 full / R$15 half; science and climate exhibits

Museu Nacional de Belas Artes — Avenida Rio Branco, Centro — open 10am–6pm, free entry; partial reopening of collection

Real Gabinete Português de Leitura — Rua Luís de Camões, Centro — open 10am–5pm, free; one of the most beautiful reading rooms in the world

Theatro Municipal guided visit — Praça Floriano, Centro — guided visits Wed–Sat, R$20; check times at the box office

Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) — Praça Mauá, Centro — open 11am–6pm, R$20; free on Tuesdays

Parque Lage — Rua Jardim Botânico, 414 — open 8am–5pm, free; the mansion and gardens are open

04 Getting Around TRANSPORT

Metrô lines 1, 2 and 4 run normally today, with the single fare at R$7.90. Uruguaiana and Cinelândia are the most useful stations for the Centro museums.

The VLT is running on its usual schedule, useful for moving between Praça Mauá and the Paço Imperial. Ride app prices surge if rain hits around 4–5pm.

05 Where to Eat LUNCH & DINNER

Lunch: Confeitaria Colombo in Centro is the classic choice for coffee and pastries, around R$60–80 per person. For something quicker, try the lunch set at Bistrô do Paço near Praça XV, around R$40–60.

Dinner: In Botafogo, Ceviche da Fabi serves excellent ceviche for R$60–90 per person. For a casual alternative, Ferro e Farinha on Rua Arnaldo Quintela does wood-fired pizza for R$50–70.

06 Practical Info GOOD TO KNOW

Carry a light rain layer and a refillable water bottle. Most museums are air-conditioned, so a light sweater helps.

Cards and Pix are widely accepted, but keep R$50–100 in cash for small quiosques and street vendors.

Centro is safe during the day around the museums and Praça XV. After 6pm, take a ride app directly from the restaurant rather than walking empty streets.

07 Community & Lifestyle FOR NEWCOMERS

Digital nomads often gather at coworking spaces in Botafogo and Flamengo on Thursdays. Ask at the front desk of your building or check local WhatsApp groups for a Thursday evening meetup.

The Rio Expats group on Meetup occasionally holds coffee mornings in Centro. Search there for today’s event, but nothing is confirmed as a regular Thursday slot.

08 Game Day THE WEEKEND ROUND

No major Rio football match is scheduled for today. The weekend calendar will bring the usual Série A fixtures, with times to be confirmed.

If you want to watch sport tonight, Botafogo’s bars will show whatever Brazilian league match is on. Try Boteco Belmonte in Flamengo or Bar Urca in Urca.

Check the official club pages on Friday morning for confirmed weekend kickoff times in Brasília time.

09 Business & Markets WEEK IN FIGURES

The market board carries all index levels and exchange rates for the last settled session. The mood is steady, with no sharp moves in either direction.

The story behind the mood is a mixed global session — US tech edged higher while some Latin American bourses slipped. The dollar was quiet against the real and the peso.

Ahead, the rest of the week looks light on major data. Expats with US-dollar income will find the exchange rate broadly stable.

10 Plan Ahead THE WEEK

THE DAYS AHEAD

THU 13 — Mild and partly cloudy, 24°C, 30% rain — museum day in Centro

FRI 14 — Warmer, 25°C, 20% rain — a good afternoon for Parque Lage or a beach walk

SAT 15 — Dry and bright, 26°C, 10% rain — the best day for Copacabana or Ipanema

SUN 16 — Warm and clear, 27°C, 10% rain — beach morning, then football fixtures likely

MON 17 — Mild start to the week — check Metrô updates before commuting
