23 areas in Metro Cebu to be affected by rotational brownouts on Aug. 13
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Parts of Cebu will experience rotational brownouts Thursday, Aug. 13, as available power supply in the Visayas grid fell below projected peak demand, the Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) said.
Veco released a schedule covering portions of Cebu City and other parts of Metro Cebu.
Rotational brownout schedule
The scheduled interruptions begin at 1 p.m. in portions of San Fernando, including Balud, Greenhills, Lantawan, Panadtaran, Sangat, and Tonggo.
From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., portions of Cebu City, including Carreta, North Reclamation Area, and Tejero, may experience an outage.
The 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. schedule covers portions of Cebu City, Talisay City, and Liloan. Affected areas include Camputhaw, Cebu Business Park, Lahug, and Luz in Cebu City; Mambaling and San Roque in Cebu City; San Roque and Tangke in Talisay City; and several barangays in Liloan.
From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., the affected areas include portions of Cebu City, Mandaue City, and Consolacion.
The 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. schedule covers portions of Cebu City, the City of Naga, San Fernando, and Liloan.
The possible interruptions will continue into the evening, with Veco listing additional areas in Cebu City, Mandaue, Consolacion, Minglanilla, Talisay, and Naga.
From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., portions of Cebu City and Mandaue City may be affected.
The 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. schedule includes areas in Cebu City, Minglanilla, Talisay, and Mandaue.
From 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., Veco said portions of Naga, Minglanilla, and Cebu City may experience rotational brownouts.
Why brownouts are necessary
Veco emphasized that the interruptions are part of efforts to help maintain grid stability amid the supply shortage.
The power distributor said it continues to monitor the situation and coordinate with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
It added that any changes to the rotational brownout schedule would be announced through its official communication channels.
The latest alert comes as the Visayas grid continues to face tight power reserves, with generation shortfalls and limited supply posing a recurring threat to electricity stability in the region.
The NGCP placed the Visayas grid under a red alert from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., when electricity demand is expected to exceed available supply.
The grid will also be under yellow alert from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., indicating that supply reserves are thin.
In an advisory, Veco said NGCP’s 8 a.m. grid status update showed available capacity at 2,283 megawatts (MW), against a peak demand of 2,360 MW.
The 77-MW supply shortfall prompted the power distributor to warn customers of possible temporary rotational brownouts in affected areas. / ###
