New India Foundation (NIF) has announced that it’ll be accepting applications for the 2026 Book Fellowship between August 15 and November 15. Open to Indian citizens, including those currently living abroad, each Fellowship carries a grant of Rs 18 lakhs. In addition to the stipend, the Fellows will receive in-house editorial support, access to some of the country’s leading writers and thinkers, and guidance through to publication.
The NIF Fellowship is a writing fellowship and is open both to debut and authors who have already published book-length works.
All nonfiction themes and genres are eligible for consideration with a single requirement: that the work contribute to a fuller understanding of contemporary India. Fellows may choose to write reportage, an academic study, or a memoir, on subjects spanning economics, society, politics, or culture.
