Andhra Pradesh State Hindu Dharma Parirakshana Trust (HDPT) Chairman Dasari Srinivasulu urged its coordinators, public representatives and local villagers to work towards restoring and protecting Gundlakamma river. He announced plans to undertake a nine-day awareness tour along the banks of the river from October 11-20 during the Navaratri festival.

The HDPT is an official trust functioning under the Endowments department. It has already initiated ‘Haritha Haram’, a plantation drive along both sides of the 280 km-long Gundlakamma river on June 5. HDPT members recently visited several villages along the riverbank and prepared a preliminary route map for the nine-day journey.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Srinivasulu said, “In view of the forthcoming Navaratri period, I have resolved to undertake a journey of awareness, service, devotion and social responsibility along the villages of the Gundlakamma riverbank. I intend to meet the local people, listen to their concerns, understand their relationship with the river, and encourage them to protect the rich natural heritage.”

“We plan to reach out to the youth, inspire them to protect the river for the future generations. We also want to create awareness about the protection of water resources, village ecosystem, native tree species, cleanliness and sanitation. Prevention of pollution, preservation of archaeological and historical heritage, community participation and sustainable living are other focus areas,” he said.
