During Steam Next Fest earlier this year, there were a few demos that took the platform by storm. About Fishing was one, a PSX-style horror fishing game all about solving a murder mystery that even The Weeknd enjoyed. Over The Hill is another; a relaxing open-world minimalist driving game. Then there was Slayblade; a Beyblade-inspired arcade roguelite where you build and battle opponents with your very own creation.

For a millennial like me, this was nostalgia overload. I had a phase, much like all of my classmates, of bringing my Beyblade into school every day to let 'em rip and battle in plastic bowls at lunchtime. And Slayblade channels that energy into a charming, quirky game set in a small town where every citizen is just begging to battle you, Pokémon trainer-style.

As you battle eager opponents, you'll fire your spinning disc of destruction into the arena, using the mouse to drag it around the bowl while maintaining momentum. Pick up power-ups and go on the offensive to whittle down your foe. For every fight you win, you'll earn cash, to be spent on upgrades and new parts.

Despite the Next Fest demo being incredibly short, Slayblade is ready to go: it's being released on Steam on Thursday, Aug. 20 for just $6. At that price, it's rude not to.
