Lionel Richie has criticized Usher and Chris Brown’s joint stadium tour, arguing that there is nothing innovative about it.

In June, Usher, 47, and Brown, 37, kicked off their Raymond & Brown: R&B tour, which has attracted attention on the internet for the former’s fan onstage interactions.

During a recent show on his ongoing tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, Richie, 77, mocked the two for their co-headlining concerts.

“Usher and Chris Brown, see they trying to do something new,” the “All Night Long” singer said in a fan-filmed clip from the show posted on X.

“The Commodores with Earth, Wind & Fire, we were doing that back 40 years ago,” he noted, quipping, “Only difference is... between then and now... we didn’t go to jail.”

As the crowd broke out into laughter and applause, Richie quickly apologized for bringing up Brown’s troubled legal history.

The Independent has contacted Brown and Usher’s representatives for comment.

The “Forever” artist infamously spent 131 days in jail for violating the terms of the probation he was ordered to serve after he pleaded guilty to physically assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna ahead of the 2009 Grammy Awards. He has since faced multiple arrests for allegations of physical assault and battery.

“They’re fine Christian men,” Richie clarified, before pointing out that back then, “we didn’t have that Instagram, and that TikTok and that go out and tell a lie and then go post it. What the hell was that?”

Richie’s recent return to the stage comes after a string of last-minute concert cancellations. Last week, he postponed his San Francisco show after a member of Earth, Wind & Fire suffered a medical emergency.

In June, he was forced to abandon his St. Paul, Minnesota, concert midway through after suffering a dizzy spell on stage.

“Now, what I have learned about my years of being in the business: when you are feeling dizzy, sit your ass down,” he told the crowd. “I want you to know that that is the first time in the history of ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ I’ve done it sitting down. That’s a bad sign! That’s a bad sign, y’all.”

Richie was reportedly transported to the hospital and announced the cancellation of his next two shows.

That same month, Usher and Brown embarked on their massive tour, which is scheduled to make stops in major U.S. cities, including Denver, Colorado; Atlanta, Georgia; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Inglewood, California, before concluding December 12 in Tampa, Florida.

The pair first revealed they were going on tour together on Instagram in April. “ITS TIME! #R&BTOUR #Raymond&Brown,” they said in a collaborative post, alongside an announcement video of them riding motorcycles at night, weaving through traffic and being chased by screaming fans before linking up in a parking garage.

They enter in an elevator that takes them to a packed stadium. “It’s time,” Usher says, as Brown replies: “Hell yeah.”
