Even before its release, Jana Nayagan became one of the most politically discussed Tamil films in recent years. The film's director, H Vinoth, now spoke about its political underlining. Jana Nayagan marks Vijay's final outing as an actor while also being his first release after taking office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. With promotional material packed with references to democracy, governance and public service, many questioned whether the film would double up as a political statement.

Director H Vinoth says the politics in Jana Nayagan is deliberate, but not divisive. Speaking exclusively to India Today, Vinoth said the film embraces politics without attacking any individual or political party.

"There is direct politics in it but not targeting someone or criticising someone. This is politics which talks about unity and for the people," he said. That philosophy, according to the filmmaker, also explains the film's title. Unlike a conventional mass title, Jana Nayagan was chosen to underline the story's democratic core.

"It is not a general term. This is a movie related to democracy, and so we chose that title. The first poster itself mentioned 'Torch Bearer of Democracy'," he explained.

The political messaging extends beyond the title. The trailer recreates Vijay's now-famous hand-slash gesture from the Tamil Nadu Assembly, while promotional material prominently identifies him as the "Honourable Chief Minister" - visuals that have further fuelled conversations around the film's political undertones. However, Vinoth defended the whip gesture and said, "It is necessary for the script and it is there. You watch the movie and if you think it is not relevant, I will answer."

The comments come months after Jana Nayagan found itself at the centre of a prolonged battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The Vijay-starrer remained caught in a seven-month-long certification delay, even as parts of the film were leaked online ahead of release.

Looking back at that period, Vinoth described it as one of the most difficult phases of his career. "There were so many dreams and plans connected to it. Everything was collapsing at once. One year of life was lost. But I believe people will give justice to all this," he said.

The director, however, credits producer KVN Productions, Vijay and the actor's longtime manager, Jagadish, for shielding the creative team from the larger fallout. "They handled the major issues, whether it was the censor certificate or the leak. We only faced minimal heat," he said.

Despite the setbacks, Vinoth believes audiences have continued to stand by the film. "I want to give them a big salute for their honesty. Vijay's films perform even on weekdays, like weekends. We seek their support and hope they help us get justice," he said.

For Vinoth, Jana Nayagan also fulfilled a long-held professional ambition. "It is a dream for every director to make a film with Vijay. It was a very happy moment when the project was finalised," he recalled.

The filmmaker said working with the actor-turned-Chief Minister became an education in commercial filmmaking. According to him, Vijay's experience across nearly seven decades of films has given him an instinctive understanding of what audiences connect with.

"He is not only an actor but also a director and singer. He understands every craft involved in cinema. Sometimes we may think something is ordinary, but he likes it—and when audiences respond similarly, you realise he knows their pulse. Anyone making cinema as a business can learn from him. I certainly did," Vinoth said.

The trailer has also drawn attention for its apparent references to women's safety, democratic values and symbolic imagery, including a whip shot that some viewers have linked to MGR's political legacy. While Vinoth declined to decode every symbol, he maintained that each element serves the story.

Asked about the film's message on women's safety, he said the takeaway is simple: "Women should not fear. They should question back if they face an issue."

Whether audiences ultimately see Jana Nayagan as Vijay's farewell blockbuster or his first major political statement, Vinoth insists its central idea is neither partisan nor personal. For him, the film is rooted in democracy, unity and the responsibility of standing with people rather than against individuals.

The film is scheduled for release on July 23. Jana Nayagan has been performing well in pre-sales at the box office.
