A 45-year-old farmer died after being attacked by an Indian gaur near Agalagandi in the Koppa Forest Division of Chikkamagaluru district on Tuesday (July 21) afternoon. This is the second such incident reported in the district this month.

The deceased, Manjunath, was attacked by the animal while he was at his farm in Donihadlu village. He sustained serious injuries and succumbed to them while being taken to the hospital.

Pulkit Meena, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Bhadra Tiger Reserve), who is also in charge of the Koppa Forest Division, told The Hindu that the incident occurred around 4 p.m. “We received information about the incident and our officers are at the spot. They are enquiring into the circumstances that led to the attack. We will take measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” he said.

Other deaths

On July 7, a woman was attacked by an Indian gaur at Hirebail in Kalasa taluk. Since February 2025, five people have died after being attacked by gaurs in the district. The repeated incidents have prompted protests by locals, who are demanding the capture and relocation of the animals.
