A casino in Rotherham town centre will be permitted to open 24 hours a day, seven days a week after no objections were made to an application to change its opening hours.

Royal Amusements on Effingham Street had applied to the council to change its permitted opening hours, which were previously between 8am and 12.30am every day of the week.

Residents were allowed to send representations for the application until 10 June, though the council recently confirmed that none were sent.

“In the absence of relevant representations, the application for the adult gaming centre was approved and does not need to be considered by the council’s licensing sub committee,” said a council statement.

In 2023, a Merkur Slots location in the centre had its plans to open 24 hours refused by Rotherham Council, though this most recent decision may set a precedent for any more entertainment venues in the town.

The news comes as several UK casinos across the nation look to extend their business hours into the later part of the night or to 24 hours.

Several locations in London, Manchester and other major cities are permitted to open 24 hours, and an Admiral casino in Norwich city centre recently applyed for permission to open for 24 hours too.

On this occasion, the council previously ruled that later opening times could impact neighbours, and that restricting hours between 2am and 7am would be in the best interests of the area. A new proposal has been made, with a decision expected from the council later this month.
