The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday took cognisance of media reports about the deaths by suicide of 19 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel between January and May 22, 2026.

The NHRC’s intervention comes amid growing concern over the mental well-being and working conditions of personnel serving in the country’s paramilitary forces.

According to data reportedly compiled by the CRPF, 281 personnel have died by suicide over the past five years. Of these, approximately 216 were on duty at the time of the death. Also, 59 personnel died by suicide in 2025, the highest number recorded by the force since 2021.

“Taking note of the issue, the Commission has issued notices to the Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Director General of the CRPF. They have been asked to submit a detailed report on the matter within two weeks,” a communique issued by the Commission said.

The notices seek a detailed report from the authorities concerned on the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the measures being taken to address the issue.
