Virender Singh Basoya, a notorious drug trafficking kingpin, was extradited to India from Dubai on Thursday (August 14, 2026), which Home Minister Amit Shah hailed as a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing battle against drug-related crimes.

He said the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) secured the return of Basoya from the UAE, creating a “new milestone” in the policy of zero tolerance against narcotics.

“By tracing the criminal through a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach, our agencies have once again proven that no matter where drug traffickers hide, they cannot escape the long arm of Indian law,” the Home Minister said.

Who is Virender Singh Basoya?

Virender Singh Basoya is a fugitive drug kingpin linked to a multi-crore international cocaine syndicate. He had reportedly been involved in a staggering ₹6,000 crore drug case in Pune. This case is part of a larger crackdown on drug syndicates that have been operating with relative impunity, often leveraging international borders to evade law enforcement.

The NCB had previously issued a Red Notice against Basoya, a formal request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest an individual pending extradition. Basoya’s arrest in Dubai, followed by his deportation back to India, has been part of the broader collaborative efforts between the Indian authorities and international law enforcement agencies.

Basoya has also been closely associated with Sandeep Dhunia, the primary suspect in the ₹13,000-crore drug seizure case, filed by the Delhi Police. Dhunia had managed to flee from Dubai to Pakistan
