The CPI on Friday staged a march to the Thrissur railway station protesting the Centre’s cancellation of a special train booked to ferry party workers from Kerala to its Delhi Chalo March scheduled to be held at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on September 1.

Inaugurating the march organised by the CPI Thrissur district council, party national executive member K.P. Rajendran accused the Narendra Modi government of trying to curb democratic dissent through such measures. “Fear and false nationalism” has become the hallmark of the Modi government, Mr. Rajendran alleged. He said cancelling trains booked for the protest or preventing party workers from reaching Delhi would not weaken the CPI’s campaign against the Centre.

He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of undermining Parliament and democratic institutions and alleged that the government was seeking to cling to power by building “lies upon lies”.

The CPI would intensify its agitation against what it described as the Centre’s “anti-people, anti-worker, anti-farmer, anti-student, anti-youth and anti-women” policies, Mr. Rajendran said. CPI Thrissur district secretary K.G. Sivanandan presided over the protest. Senior party leaders participated.
