NSYNC’s Joey Fatone has shared why he thinks the boy band won’t reunite anytime soon.

Fatone was an original member of the group — which was one of the most popular boy bands of the 1990s and 2000s, selling over 70 million records — alongside Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chasez, Jason Galasso and Chris Kirkpatrick. Galasso left the band and was replaced by Lance Bass in 1995.

Fatone, 49, appeared alongside band member Bass on SiriusXM Friday, explaining that they are all at different stages in their personal lives.

“All of us have to be on the same page, which we are not, and that’s not a negative thing,” he said.

Fatone has two older daughters, aged 16 and 25, but his former bandmates have much younger children.

“I have two daughters, 25 and 16. I’m ready to party and have a great time,” he said. “[Bass has] got young kids. Justin‘s got young kids. Chris has a young child.”

He then joked that Chasez “is the smartest one” because “he has a dog, no kids.”

Fatone reflected on the difficulty of balancing parenting with touring, saying: “When I was young, when I was 23 years old, touring with NSYNC, I had my child, and it wasn’t easy.”

“So I can only imagine if the three of them were to go on tour with multiple [kids]…Yes, it would be fun. Yes, it would be great. But then you have your spouses and your other people saying, ‘You need to come home because I need your ass here, because you need to help me with this, this, this, this, this, this.’”

“It’s very tough,” he added.

The singer also said that by the time he had his second daughter, the band was no longer together, and he was able to spend more time with his family.

“So I would never take those years away from them,” he said. “And that is the honest truth for me.”

Bass said in the interview that one way around this issue was to “do a summer tour and bring them on the road.”

While the band has fielded reunion rumors over the years, they last performed together in 2024 when they reunited for one of Timberlake’s one-night-only shows to promote his album Everything I Thought It Was.

The group made another surprise appearance together in 2023, when they arrived at the MTV VMAs to present the award for Best Pop Video award to Taylor Swift for her song “Anti Hero.”

At the time, Swift was overjoyed by the reunion, and said to the former bandmates: “What are you doing now? Are you doing something?” She asked the group. “They’re gonna do something and I need to know what it is! You’re pop personified.”

That year, the group recorded their first song together in over 20 years for the animated kids movie Trolls Band Together.

The last time they performed together was at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2013, singing their hits “Girlfriend” and “Bye Bye Bye” as Timberlake received MTV’s 2013 Video Vanguard award.
