Ronda crash: Motorcycle, tricycle collide; 3 injured

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Three people were injured after a motorcycle and a tricycle collided along the national highway in Barangay Palanas, Ronda, Cebu on Friday evening, August 14.

The crash occurred at around 7:55 p.m., with the incident reported to police at around 7:59 p.m., according to the Ronda Municipal Police Station.

Tricycle encroached opposite lane

In a Saturday, August 15, interview, Ronda Police Chief Police Major Abraham B. Igot said the initial investigation showed that the tricycle, driven by a 57-year-old man, was traveling from the Ronda poblacion toward Alcantara when it encroached into the opposite lane.

The motorcycle, driven by a 24-year-old man with a 37-year-old man as back-rider, was traveling from Moalboal toward Dumanjug and was reportedly within its proper lane when the collision occurred.

Igot said the tricycle had already anticipated making a turn and had moved toward the opposite lane when it collided with the oncoming motorcycle.

The impact threw both drivers and the motorcycle’s back-rider from their vehicles, leaving all three injured.

All three rushed the to hospital

The three injured individuals were immediately brought to the Barili District Hospital for medical treatment with assistance from the Ronda Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

All three were conscious and able to talk while receiving treatment.

Police have yet to disclose the specific injuries they sustained.

As of Saturday, Igot said the parties’ medical treatment was being prioritized before discussions on the incident could be finalized.

Settlement discussions

Igot said there had been no indication of drunk driving so far.

No case had been filed as of Saturday, as the parties had already begun discussing a possible settlement.

Igot said the parties had reached an initial agreement and were finalizing the terms. They may return to the police station later Saturday or on Sunday to finalize the agreement, he said.

As of this writing, police were awaiting the outcome of the parties’ discussions.
